Making a living as a singer is an art. Managing your money is, too.

What if you could pursue a fulfilling career as a singer and build a financially sustainable life along the way?

That’s the idea behind Moolah-LA!: Money Mooves for the Modern Singer, a new book co-authored by mezzo-soprano Emily Fons and financial wellness educator and attorney Rebecca Eve Selkowe.

Written by two “moooosicians” with a shared love of personal finance and cow comedy, Moolah-LA! takes a silly-yet-serious approach to a subject that too often gets pushed to the side in an artist’s training: money.

For singers, a career can come with an unusual financial landscape. Income may be unpredictable. Contracts, taxes, travel, housing, health insurance, retirement savings, student loans, and periods between engagements can all make financial planning feel overwhelming.

Moolah-LA! is designed to help make those challenges more manageable.

Drawing on Emily’s experience as an internationally performing opera singer and Rebecca’s expertise in financial wellness, the book offers practical guidance for young and emerging singers who want to make thoughtful financial decisions while pursuing their artistic goals. Emily’s own career has included performances with companies and ensembles including the Canadian Opera Company, Seattle Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago’s Lyric Opera, and others. She has also remained committed to supporting artists and communities in her home state of Wisconsin.

The goal isn’t to tell singers to choose between art and financial security. It’s to help them build both.

Because a sustainable career isn’t just about getting the next role. It’s about creating a life that allows you to keep doing the work you love.
